HOMILY OF 11TH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
2 Cor 11:18, 21-30; Psalm 33(34):2-7; Matt 6:19-23
St. Paul had the most impressive résumé of Early Christendom, but he insisted, despite listing his accomplishments and placing them side by side with those of his detractors, that he has nothing to boast of, other than his feebleness, which constantly reminded him of his utter dependence on God.

Important to Paul than attracting earthly accolades was setting his heart on the spiritual; he built his treasure in heaven. He credited his successful works to the grace of God. As we go through life, we must work hard and put everything in order to accomplish our goals. We must take advantage of all the opportunities that God provides us in life. But, we must be purposeful in our endeavor and always realize how limited our accomplishments are in comparison to God’s eternal plan for us. So, our ultimate focus and motivating force must be more than personal selfish goals, as we must not lose sight of our heavenly goal. Earthly accomplishments are fleeting. Giving the glory to God and using these fleeting realities to advance our ultimate end is the right way to go. That is how we make our treasures in heaven. Today, Jesus encourages us to build heavenly equity, through our commitment to loving God above all else and loving our neighbor as Christ loves us. Life has become so distracting because of the challenges and pulls that drag us around in our efforts to keep body and soul together. People have little or no time for God and spiritual growth. Yet, Jesus’ reminder is so timely because life is getting shorter and shorter. Death is inevitable; the afterlife is also inevitable, and unlike the finitude of this life, it is eternal. Let us build heavenly equity; spiritual equity that would ensure that we spend eternity with God.
Lord, be the center of my life. Amen.
