HOMILY OF 12TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “If you O Lord should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive” (Ps 130).

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Gen 12:1-9; Psalm 33:12-13, 18-22; Matt 7:1-5

We begin the Abram series and the third part of the Sermon on the Mount today with two lessons. First, in the midst of life’s uncertainties, we must trust and follow our well-informed and faith-based instincts, knowing that God goes with us. Abraham heard God’s voice, directing him into an undetermined future. All he had was a promise from this God, whom he really did not know much. Once Abraham knew that God was on his side, he trusted and you know the rest of the story. Abram’s prompt response to God’s call is our model. God’s instruction to Abram was clear but its destination was uncertain.

Without asking any questions, Abram got up and did what God instructed. Although his journey would have twists and turns, ups and downs, Abram would learn through it all that the God, who called him, is faithful to his promises and dependable. Like Abram, it is not always that we are certain about the future or our destination, but we must, also like him, have blind trust in God because God is faithful. If we walk faithfully and trustingly with God, even the negatives will be turned into positive outcomes. Second, no one knows the entire story except God. Every human judgment is partial because we only know partially. It makes perfect sense, therefore, to heed Jesus’ encouragement that we not be judgmental. We must be more open-minded and understanding toward people. We must overcome habitual and common vices like judgmental attitudes, inequities and discriminate standards, unfair expectations from others, and condemning and blaming people for the same wrongs that plague our lives. Even when there is reason for us to have an opinion about people, we still do not have enough facts to pass judgment. Only God judges righteously and rightly.

Lord, Have mercy on me in your kindness. Amen.
