HOMILY OF 17TH SUNDAY HOMILY ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “HAVE YOU UNDERSTOOD ALL THESE THINGS?”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Kg 3:5-12, Rom 8:28-30, Matt 13:44-52
The most valuable things in life can’t be bought. Wisdom, understanding, peace, true love, faith, the breath of life, etc. are all gifts of God. God gave Solomon wisdom, understanding and so much more because he knew this fact. Paul reminds us today that in Christ Jesus, God gave us the greatest gift of all: a share in his eternal glory. That being the case, today’s first two parables remind us to cherish and jealously guard our faith. Christ, the object of our faith is our treasure and pearl. He is worth all that we have and are.

Accordingly, nothing and no one should make us lose our find. The third parable reminds us that while good and evil coexist in many spheres of life, we must sustain the character of God’s goodness in us. Evil has no room in God’s kingdom. The fourth parable urges us to open our minds to both the old and the new. That is how we gain true understanding because the God, who directed human affairs in the past, continues to accompany us in diverse and new ways that we must discern as we journey through life’s challenges.
Lord, endow our lives with the essentials that money cannot buy. Amen.
