HOMILY OF 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “THIS REALLY IS THE PROPHET WHO IS TO COME INTO THE WORLD”
BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu
2 Kings 4: 42-44, Ps. 145, Eph. 4: 1-6, John 6: 1-15
This Sunday is the 17th in ordinary time (Yr. B). We are a lucky people to have Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He is very caring, very compassionate and dependable. A good leader who has his people at heart and provides all their needs . The feeding of five thousand men in today’s gospel (cf. Jn. 6:1-15), shows that Jesus does not ignore our needs. He is a leader who is down to earth and in touch with the realities of life. He knows that, hunger is dangerous! It can kill and lead to many crimes.

Like Jesus, Elisha (the man of God) also told the man who brought him bread to , “Give it to the people to eat”(2Kgs.4:42-44). This also showed his concern for the poor and needy. A true leader does not ignore the needs of the people. Most world leaders today are the opposite of Jesus. While Jesus had pity on those suffering, world leaders increase the hardship of their citizens through high cost of living.
Paul is telling the leaders of today: “Do all you can to preserve the unity of the spirit by the peace that binds you together”(Eph.4:1-6). The fact that there is hunger and starvation in most nations of the world shows bad governance. We pray that God will send good leaders into the world’s political systems. Leaders who wil care for the needs of their citizens. And the people will say: “This really is the prophet who is to come into the world.” Happy Sunday!
