HOMILY OF 17TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “YES, AS THE CLAY IS IN THE POTTER’S HAND, SO YOU ARE IN MINE, HOUSE OF ISRAEL.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Jer 18:1-6; Psalm 145(146):2-6; Matt 13:47-53
God is the potter; we are the clay; He melts and molds us into the best that we are meant to be. This process, like the pruning process, is not always palatable, neither is it without pain and sacrifice. It is, quite often, a painful process. But, when we put ourselves completely in God’s hands, and when we cooperate with God’s purposes, the outcomes are usually wonderful and for our own good.

God creates, recreates and renews us daily; each person with a different character and personality; a different destiny in this life, but all united in the one destiny of eternal life, desired for us by God. In God’s hands, we are able to open up to the new things that God is demanding of us as well as the good things that God is doing in our lives. The imagery of the potter and the clay is an invitation to bend our lives to God’s will, doing what God wants of us rather than preferring to live as we want. That is what good discipleship is made of, as declared by Jesus at the end of the series of parables that we have been reading. It is in our positive acceptance of the pruning process, that is, allowing the potter to mold and remake us, that we maintain our identity as good fish, netted by the Lord and kept in the boat of life, not thrown away. In the meantime, our understanding that even the Lord nets both good and bad helps us to help our weaker brothers and sisters, humbly and generously without being judgmental.
Lord, mold me according to your will and give me the grace to stay in your hands despite the challenges of being made-over. Amen.
