HOMILY OF 1ST FRIDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY OF 1ST FRIDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: THE STRIVING TO ATTAIN HEAVEN!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Heb 4:1-5, 11; Psalm 77(78):3-4, 6-8; Mark 2:1-12
Today’s first reading enjoins us to do everything within our power not to miss the place of rest. Isn’t this why Jesus rewarded the faith of those who brought him the paralytic from an opening in the roof by forgiving the man’s sins? In truth, forgiveness of sins was much more important than making the man walk. But to rebuke the scribes who had doubts, Jesus went ahead to physically strengthen the man’s limbs as well.

Friends, miracles are important, but the greater miracle is that Jesus Christ died for our sins, that we might have life. We should therefore be more concerned about the forgiveness of our sins and how to be better each day as we work out our salvation in fear and trembling. St. Antony, whose memorial we celebrate today, was the father of Monastic life. After the death of his parents, he gave all he had to the poor, went into the wilderness and began a life of prayer, penitence and poverty. Through many trials and temptations, his example won him many disciples who were attracted by his wisdom, moderation, and holiness. He lived to be over a hundred years old, and died in 356.Can we do same?
