HOMILY OF 1ST MONDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: KILLING THE MESSENGER DOESN’T STOP THE MESSAGE
BY: Fr. Paul Karabari
Heb 1:1-6; Psalm 96(97):1-2, 6-7, 9; Mark 1:14-20
“After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,…”
The message of the Kingdom of God is tenaciously set on a firm foundation that nothing can ever destroy. The reason is that nobody can stop God. In the Gospel of today (Mark 1:14-20), we are told that after John had been arrested, Jesus started his own preaching. John’s arrest never stopped Jesus from preaching. The ministers of truth can be silent, but truth endures storms in all ages. When one is laid aside, God raises others to continue the work.

While John had been forcefully removed, Christ was raising Simon, Andrew, James and John, and others to continue with the mission of redemption. Nothing can stop God’s plan.
We see the urgency with which the fishermen of Galilee left their fishing business to follow Jesus. Those who price other things above the call of Christ are unfit for the Kingdom. When God needs our services, we must count ourselves privileged to provide. This is because no other business is more valuable than the kingdom business. To say no to Christ is to say no to life.
These fishermen accepted to be interrupted by Christ and their occupation to be changed. Because we value other things than the things of God, we can hardly allow God to interfere with our business. So many of us have left God out of our handiwork and business. We create territories of non-interference and keep God at bay. Can God count on us this year? As we begin this day, can he interfere in whatever we have planned to do? We must allow ourselves to be used by God to continue his work on earth. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God bless you and your household always through Christ, our Lord Amen.
