HOMILY OF 1ST SUNDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: HE SHOWED HIM ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THIS WORLD WITHIN A MOMENT

Deuteronomy 26:4-10; Romans 10:8-13; Luke 4:1-13
(a) The first Sunday of Lent tell of the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness after fasting and praying for 40 days and 40 nights. This is not to say that the Lent period is a time of temptations but rather a period that strengthens us and gives us the spiritual know-how to overcome temptations of life, which is always

(b) We are tempted with what we are capable of doing, what attracts us and with what we desire, with things and persons close to us. Jesus was actually hungry after the fasting, he is capable of making breads out of the stones and the stones were strewn all over the place, some having already the shape of breads. Jesus could say just one world, at it happens but He would have obeyed the instruction of the devil while trying to prove His capabilities. The same is with the 3rd temptation, “if you are the son of God, jump down from this pinnacle…” In life, in exchange of words, in arguments, and someone begins to tell you like, “if you are man enough, if you are the daughter of your father, if you are this or that… touch me” That is the devil talking inside the one. We don’t need to prove to such people who we are, our good works should speak to them.
(c) Within a moment, the devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of this world. Everything looked possible and reachable. When you see someone trying to make reaches and acquire wealth “within a moment, the devil is lurking and so he has led many people into cultism, ritualism, stealing, kidnapping etc. They want to have millions in an instance. They are simply bowing to the devil.
It is interesting to note how Jesus won all the temptations. In all the temptations, he replies with the Word of God, “it is written…” In temptations, we are expected to make recourse to what God wills as already made known in the Holy Script and which is in our hearts and mouths as the letter to the Romans says. We are not to engage in dialogue with the devil with the logic and reasoning of the flesh and it’s desires. Eve in the garden reasoned with the Serpent according to the allures of her desires and failed. May God give us the strength to overcome or come out every temptation of life.
