HOMILY OF 1ST THURSDAY IN ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal Rock.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isaiah 26: 1-6, Ps. 118, Matthew 7: 21.24-27
In Israel’s difficult times, the prophet’s message always paved paths out of their troubles by emphasizing the need for Israel to consistently stick with her God, their main and sole source of life and livelihood. God gave them everything. When their infidelity disrupted that relationship, they were often tempted to seek refuge elsewhere to flee from sufferings that were perceived to be punishments from the God they offended. Yet, He was the only true refuge that they had since all other powers amounted to nothing before God’s awesomeness. We too often seek refuge elsewhere amidst our troubles. The prophet wonderfully reminds us: God is our eternal rock and we must trust Him forever.

That is also the message that the gospel addresses, encouraging us to build on Christ, as our rock foundation. Any other foundation is but sand. The building blocks for such a building are sincerity of heart and purpose in our religious commitment and the integrity of a faith confession that is supported by every other aspect of our lives: both words and actions must be in sync as we profess our love of and faith in God.
Christ, Our Rock Foundation, may we be unshakeable by life’s troubles because we have you. Amen.
