HOMILY THEME: REDIRECTING AFFECTIONS

Today, our bookshops and libraries are filled with books on how to become rich. However, Benjamin Franklin once remarked, “He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.” In the modern world, money has become a god, commanding the allegiance of many. The poor seek to get rich quickly, while the rich cling tightly to their wealth. Many motivational books on wealth-building recount stories of billionaires who rose from rags to riches, from nothing to everything.

Jesus once challenged a rich young man, saying, “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” The young man left in sadness because he had many possessions—properties, money, and industries. He was deeply unhappy with what Jesus demanded of him because he was unwilling to follow the new path, the perfect way to happiness that Jesus was pointing out. He was self-sufficient and self-reliant, reluctant to empty himself of the burden of wealth. Though he appeared to be deeply pious and orthodox, he lacked radical spirituality. He loved his wealth and possessions more than God, leading to divided attention and a failure to fully love the one true God.

Can we learn to redirect our affections toward loving God above everything else, including wealth and gold?
