HOMILY OF 21ST THURSDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

“The fat dances best when the cat is away.” A similar story is told of a farmer who gave his three sons seeds to plant while he travelled. The first son planted diligently, watered the seeds daily, and soon had a flourishing garden. The second son delayed planting until it was almost too late, and his crop was stunted. The third son left the seeds in the sack, confident that his father would not check carefully. When the father returned, he asked each son to present his harvest. Only the first could rejoice; the others offered excuses. The lesson is clear: sooner or later, the “teacher” or “master” returns, and excuses cannot replace responsibility.

This story reminds us that discipline in the absence of authority is what reveals true integrity. Jesus is like the teacher who stepped out from the class (world) and assured his disciples he would come back again. He taught his disciples how to love and live responsibly until his second coming.
However, many of his followers tend to forget their assignments in life and live recklessly. Jesus praises the faithful servant who works well while waiting for his master and denounces the servant who abandons his duty and forgets about the responsibilities entrusted to him. Jesus emphatically reminds us to be ready, because “The Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44). He encourages us to imitate the faithful and diligent servant. Shall we be ready to give Him a good account of our stewardship when He returns?
