HOMILY OF 22ND WEDNESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: JESUS HEALS & DELIVERS

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Luke 4:38–44

The sickness that refuses medicine has not yet met prayer. At different times in our lives, we experience all kinds of brokenness—broken hearts, broken bodies, and broken spirits. Our broken hearts are consequences of emotional distress and disappointment; our broken bodies come from sickness and physical pain; and our broken spirits reveal themselves through despair, sadness, low morale, and depression.

Jesus came to restore people to wholeness and to enable them to enjoy the fullness of life. He says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). He fulfils the words of the Psalmist: God “heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). He healed Simon’s mother-in-law by approaching her, taking her by the hand, and helping her up (Luke 4:38-39).

Even more, all who were sick were brought to Him; He laid His hands on each of them and healed them (Luke 4:40). Jesus continues to stand in constant solidarity with the human race, especially with the sick and suffering. How confident are we in asking Jesus, the Saviour, to heal our broken hearts, bodies, and spirits?
