HOMILY OF 23RD WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “There is only Christ: he is everything and he is in everything.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Colossians 3:1-11, Ps. 145:2-3, 10-11, Luke 6:20-26

St. Paul envisages a dispassionate world, without boundaries and differences between peoples on the basis of the oneness of humanity, made in the image and likeness of God, and redeemed by the blood of Christ, whose love was inclusive and non-discriminatory. Such boundaries and differences exist and are defined, enshrined and sustained, by selfish and divisive intents that are disguised as policies.

St. Paul suggests that only a vision of life that is focused on the ultimate goal (life with God in heaven) would make such a non-discriminatory world possible. Such a life must be characterized by the virtues espoused of true disciples in Jesus’ teachings (beatitudes), and modeled after Christ himself. We must rid ourselves of those worldly ways that are rebuked by St. Paul in the first reading. Such worldly allurements have become so powerful in our society that Paul describes their practices as enslavement and idolatry. Such idolatrous enslavements often arise from crave for power, influence, wealth, ambitions, and other self-centered interests. Ultimately, Christians should take the place of Christ in their lives more seriously, knowing that there is only Christ, who is everything and in everything.” Knowing this and convincingly centering our lives on Christ in all aspects helps us to relate to all else with the needed detachment, thus maintaining our focus on what is truly important in life. For, as the reversal of fortunes asserted in today’s gospel reminds us, many of the things that we hold on to in this life and transient and do not endure.

Lord, bring us to true life in you. Amen.
