HOMILY OF 24TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “DO NOT CRY… YOUNG MAN, I TELL YOU TO GET UP.”

1 Tim 3:1-13; Psalm 100(101):1-3, 5-6; Luke 7:11-17
The first reading reminds us that good leaders, ministers, servants and organizers are necessary for successful organization in our communities and churches, especially, when they lead by example. More important is the fact that such leaders must have the spiritual and moral locus standi that is prerequisite for effective leadership, especially in the church. In addition, openness to God’s will and the working of the Spirit, dedication to the good of the community, selflessness and humility, are important attributes that must be naturally present in the persons and dispositions of such leaders, so that the zeal they possess would naturally drive them in the service of God and God’s people. Such service must, as a matter of importance and priority, place the poor, the needy, widows, orphans, underprivileged, voiceless, and marginalized as top priority in the administration of the community.

The gospel reading reassures us that Jesus meets us in our time of need, hopelessness, powerlessness and vulnerability. The widow of Nain didn’t approach him for help. Jesus first saw her situation, felt pity for her, and took the initiative to take care of her immediate and obvious need. Thus, the one, who is life and has power over death, placed his hands on the bier and called her son to life. Jesus confirmed his promise to raise us to new life in the raising of this young man, the daughter of Jairus, and Lazarus. The greatest grief and pain for humans often come from the moment of death, both for the one who has died and for the ones left behind. May all those who mourn hear those powerful words of Jesus today: “do not weep.” And may our beloved dead also hear his call to life: “I tell you to get up.” The joy of the resurrection is the greatest source of consolation for both the departed and the bereaved. May Christ take pity on us, sinful as we are, on our dying day, and raise us up to new life with himself.
Father, raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.
