HOMILY OF 26TH THURSDAY THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: EMBRACING GOD’S MISSION OF PEACE IN A CORRUPT WORLD

BY: Fr. Isaac Awe

Luke 9:57-62

Are we willing to give God unquestioning service and to pursue whatever mission he gives us?

The mission of Christ on earth is to give life (John 10:10) and that is why the psalmist says in his days justice shall flourish and fullness of peace forever. The fullness of peace will only come to pass if and only if we are united as stated in the second reading “For he’s the peace between us and has made the two into one and has broken down the barriers which used to keep them apart”(Ephesians 2:14).

However, as today marks our independence, we should also set ourselves free from all vices which may hinder our growth physically, spiritually, economically… For we brought nothing and we are going with nothing. As leaders, we are called to be dutiful, responsible and considerate. The fear of the lord should be our watch word and we should always keep in mind that justice shall flourish one day and it may be too late to cry when the head is off.

Like all godly parents, Joseph and Mary raised the child Jesus in the fear and wisdom of the Lord. Joseph was given a unique task as the guardian and protector of Mary and of Jesus. What can we learn from the example and witness of Joseph? Joseph is a man of God, a man of unquestioning obedience and willing service. He is a man of prayer and a man of God’s word. Through faith he recognized the hand of God in the mystery of the Incarnation, the Son of God taking flesh as the son of Mary. Joseph is a man of action, diligent in the care of his family and ready to do the Lord’s bidding. Joseph fearlessly set aside his own plans when God called him to “take to the road” and to leave his familiar surroundings: his home, friends and relatives, and the security of his livelihood in order to pursue a hidden mission God entrusted to him as the guardian of the new-born King. God has a plan for each of us.

We pray to our lady Queen and Patroness of Nigeria to restore peace in our land and to change us all for better so as to see the need to serve God in men out of love of God and man.

PRAYER: Lord, make us faithful servants and guardians of your truth and your word. Help us to obey you willingly, like Joseph, with unquestioning trust and with joyful hope. Amen
