HOMILY OF 29TH SATURDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: OPPORTUNITY FOR REPENTANCE
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Jesus reminds us not to judge others for their suffering or misfortune; instead, He calls us to see such events as opportunities for our own repentance. In His time, there was a common belief among the Jews that misfortune resulted from past sins—a perspective still prevalent in many cultures, especially in parts of Africa, where misfortunes are often attributed to the sins of the individual, their parents, or ancestors.

To challenge this thinking, Jesus referenced two tragedies: the Galileans whom Pilate killed at the temple, mingling their blood with sacrifices, and the 18 people who perished when the tower of Siloam collapsed. He asked if these incidents occurred because the victims were worse sinners, then emphasized, “Unless you repent, you will all perish as they did” (Luke 13:5). Jesus’ message is clear: these events should not be interpreted as divine punishment but as reminders for the living to take heed.
Judging others’ misfortunes as a result of their sins can lead to self-righteousness and a “holier-than-thou” attitude. The Apostle Paul also warns, “Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Instead of judgment, let us choose reflection, soul-searching, and genuine repentance whenever we witness suffering around us.
