In our first reading (Ephesians 3:2-12), Saint Paul writes about God’s plan to unite all people in Christ. This unity was a hallmark of Saint John of Capistrano’s life, particularly in his efforts to resolve the centuries-old conflict between the Franciscan Observants and Conventuals.
The Observants emphasized strict adherence to Saint Francis’ Rule, while the Conventuals allowed for greater flexibility. Saint John, an Observant himself, worked tirelessly to reconcile these factions, promoting harmony and unity within the Franciscan Order.
In our gospel text (Luke 12:39–48), Jesus teaches about vigilance and faithfulness. Saint John exemplified these, leading a crusade against the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Belgrade (1456). He also worked alongside Saint John Hunyadi, a Hungarian leader, to defend Christian territories and advocated for the protection of Christian prisoners and the liberation of enslaved Christians.
Saint John of Capistrano’s life challenges us to foster unity within our communities, defend our faith with courage, and remain vigilant, awaiting the Lord’s return. May his example inspire us to live as faithful warriors, building up the Body of Christ. Amen.
