HOMILY OF 2ND FRIDAY IN EASTER: YEAR A
HOMILY OF 2ND FRIDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “The Apostles went out rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 5:34-42; Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14; John 6:1-15
When God’s Spirit finds a home in you and your life is firmly rooted in Christ, no misfortune, pain and suffering touches you any longer, because you have Someone greater and more sublime. That was the case with Jesus’ Apostles in the first reading, who were flogged for the sake of the Name of Jesus even though they were innocent. They upheld and refused to let go of their conviction.

They would not swap their faith in Christ and their confession for comfort and freedom. Gamaliel was the only voice of reason and discernment amongst the Jewish leaders. His intervention probably saved them from greater punishment or execution. He was God’s instrument. God raises and uses people from unexpected quarters to fight our battles for us or show us the right path in life quite often. Do we recognize them? How often have you found yourself in the same situation as Gamaliel and you refused to speak the truth or be the voice of reason? Were you part of the problem instead of being part of the solution? Did you turn your face away from, or pretend not to see, the injustice, falsehood, and oppression before you? The openness, generosity and willingness to be God’s instrument as demonstrated by the little boy with the loaves and fish in today’s gospel is what God asks of us. We must shun the reluctance and selfishness of those who would have preferred if the loaves and fish were kept away, hidden and preserved for a select few, out of fear they would run out of food. Like Jesus, who gave himself as symbolized in the offering of the bread before consumption, we are urged to become bread and eucharist for others, so that through our generosity and openness, the prayers of many others may be answered. We pray for bread for the hungry and starving, homes for the homeless, respite for refugees, and comfort for the weary.
Lord, infuse us the heart, knowledge, simplicity, courage, sanctity and zeal of your early apostles. Amen.
