HOMILY OF 2ND FRIDAY OF THE ADVENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “ANYONE WHO FOLLOWS YOU, O LORD, WILL HAVE THE LIGHT OF LIFE”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isaiah 48 : 17 – 19, Matthew 11 : 16 – 19

In today’s first reading, the Lord assured Israel that her path would be less difficult if she stuck with her God, followed His guidance and obeyed His ordinances. God teaches us what is good and shows us the path of life. He invites us to follow that path. Humans, however, have the free will to respond to that invitation or ignore it.

Each choice has consequences as we see in the responsorial psalm, which invites us live righteously so we may have the fulness of life. Part of our response to the call to righteousness is to recognize the manifestation of God’s presence amongst us; usually through unexpected agents. Being unduly critical of others can sometimes lead to indifference, the kind associated with the generation that saw nothing good in either John the Baptist or Jesus. Yet, to those who humbly paid attention, John pointed to Jesus as God’s saving intervention in human history; and Jesus blessed them with the gifts he bore, while others went away empty. Let us open our eyes to the many ways that God commands our attention today and not pass our blessings on because of selfishness, self-centeredness and greed.

Lord, open our eyes to your presence amongst us. Amen.
