HOMILY OF 2ND MONDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY OF 2ND MONDAY IN LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME:“THEY LEFT EVERYTHING AND FOLLOWED HIM.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Peter 4:7-11, Ps. 96:1-3,7-8,10, Luke 5:1-11
The gospel for St. Patrick’s feast focuses on evangelization and mission, especially as products of God’s grace and the gifts that God has given to us. St. Patrick’s life shows that he totally obeyed the instruction to Peter, urging him to put into deep water, as he left no stone unturned in his missionary endeavor: so profound that the whole of Ireland was infused with it, and those so infused bore the message as missionaries to different parts of the world. So, St. Patrick is celebrated as the Secondary Patron of Nigeria because of the impact of Irish missionaries on our people.

Today’s celebration challenges us to put our gifts and talents to missionary use. As disciples, our commitment to Christ is incomplete until we have taken the injunction to put into deep water seriously. That fishing territory may be quite near us; our families, our communities, our circle of friends, and acquaintances. St. Peter reminds us in the first reading that each of us has received a special grace that we must use with a view to preparing ourselves to meet the Master on the Day of the Lord. This eschatological perspective of human existence has been lost in our time, so we live as if there is no tomorrow, no eternity. That, as we know, is both foolish and self-destructive. These gifts are also given by God for the service of others; the service of the Church and our communities, as well as the service of the most vulnerable in our time. That was the spirit of St. Patrick. That is the spirit of Lent. So, we must key into that spirit so that everything is thus done for the greater glory of God: Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam.
Lord, infuse us with the courageous missionary spirit of St. Patrick. Amen
