BY: Fr Casmir Nkamuke
Bar 5:1-9, Phil 1:4-6, 8-11, Luke 3:1-6
Today is the Second Sunday in our preparation for the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Liturgy of today assures us of the restoration that Christ’s coming ushers. It also invites us to make straight the Lord’s path by living pure and blameless lives.

The first describes the joy and glory that awaits the children of God. At the return from exile, the Israelites were in sorrow and distress. The reading from Baruch inspires hope on us all with the assurance that at the command of God, we will experience peace through integrity, and honour through devotedness, guided by his glory and escorted by his mercy and integrity.
Saint Paul assures us that the good work began by God in us will be fulfilled. On our part, he admonishes us to increase more in our love for each other. This increase will help us become pure and blameless, and thus prepare us well for the Day of Christ, when we will attain the perfect joy and goodness prepared to us by Christ.
In the gospel, John prepares for the Lord’s coming by proclaiming baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. To receive the Lord worthily and gracefully, we must make straight his path. Repentance is a prerequisite for savouring the joy of the Advent of the Lord.
Beloved in the Lord, the joy of the Lord’s coming is real. It increases faith, restores hope, and inspires charity. As we intensify our preparation for the joyful celebration of God’s coming, may we not forget to include repentance and growth in love. Advent is a time we are assured that God has not given up on us, and as such we should not give up on ourselves. God invites us today to make the path of the Lord straight. He invites us to join his in break the mountains and valleys of our fellow humans by helping those in need and comforting those in great sorrow.
May God give us the grace to prepare properly to welcome him in our hearts and in our world. May we prepare properly to share the joy of his coming, by repenting of our sins, and by growing in love, especially by our charitable acts to the downtrodden.
Happy Sunday!
