HOMILY OF 2ND SUNDAY OF THE LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: JOURNEYING TOWARDS THE MOUNTAIN-TOP
BY: Fr. Arthur Ntembula
Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 9:28-36
You cannot meet God and remain the same. The encounter is transformative. It gives us a story to tell about how God changed us. Our life becomes a sign that shows others that we have been to the “mountain-top” where we have met the Lord.

Our life is a journey to the mountain where we desire to meet the Lord and be transformed. However, it is not an easy one. It requires courage. There are moments of frustration and thoughts of giving up, but we continue to move forward because our strength lies in the conviction that we will reach the top where the Lord awaits us. Every single step we take, therefore, is important. It doesn’t matter how slowly we move; what counts is that we don’t stop moving.
We can imagine how difficult it must have been for the disciples to climb the mountain of the Transfiguration, but they never gave up. They were convinced that what awaited them was greater than their exhaustion. The hope of meeting the Lord kept urging them on. The fact that they were not alone on this journey, but with Jesus, gave them even more energy to keep going. From our own experiences, we can attest that walking towards God is the hardest thing to do. Those who persevere on this journey will surely come to savour the glory of the Almighty God who transforms them from the inside out. This is a walk of faith where we chat with Jesus, listen to Him, share our struggles, and allow Him to ease the journey. The “never give up” spirit is what everyone needs to reach the mountaintop. It is the only key to living a miraculous life. You can’t tell the story of how you encountered God if you gave up easily.
At the mountain-top, Jesus is transfigured in the presence of his three disciples, and the climax of this miraculous encounter is the revelation of his identity as the Son of God. Walking with Jesus and witnessing the glory of God manifest in his presence means something more than just an occurrence; it signifies our own miraculous transformation. It means that the mountains we must climb in our lives cannot hinder our journey towards the Lord. On this journey, Jesus is involved, and when we reach the mountain top, his transfiguration becomes our own transformation. We have encountered the Lord, and our lives are forever changed. St. Paul tells us that we become citizens of heaven because Jesus has transformed our lowly bodies to be like his glorified body. Therefore, he exhorts us to stand firm in the Lord. Every mountain top is within reach if we just keep climbing.
