HOMILY OF 2ND THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Heb 7:25–8:6; Psalm 40:7-10, 17; Mark 3:7-12

Several times in Mark’s gospel, devils hailed, greeted and even paid homage to Jesus through possessed persons. Each time, Jesus silenced them and prevented them from making him known. WHY? Jesus knew their falsehood, flattery and deception. They were not genuine confessions of faith.

Also, genuine confession of faith remained premature until disciples had a fuller understanding of Jesus’ identity. That confession would be revealed when he died after his crucifixion, as precisely noted in Mark 15:39, through the lips of the Roman Centurion. Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, Son of God but also the Suffering Servant of God, who was crucified and died on the cross to give us life. As I contemplate today’s gospel, I think of the many who call on God’s name and confess Jesus daily. I think about how much falsehood, flattery and deception there still is in many religious confessions. I also think of the many imperfect approaches of struggling people, who sincerely desire God but whose sincerity is tainted by sin, doubt, fear, and misconceptions. I can only pray for the grace for us to be more sincere and more truthful in our confession of faith. Such sincerity comes from an understanding of Jesus that includes not just the glorious part of things but also his passion and death; and therefore, an embrace of God’s unshakable love for us at all times, no matter what our condition is. That includes our wholesome response to Jesus’ demand for true disciples to take up their cross daily and follow him.

Lord, help me to be true to your Name in word and deed. Amen.
