HOMILY OF 2ND TUESDAY OF LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: LEADING BY EXAMPLE

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Isaiah 1:10, 16-20; Matthew 23:1-12

Wise people say a good example is the best sermon. Effective teaching goes with demonstration, and effective preaching is best done through an exemplary life.

Jesus spoke against the hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees. He said to the crowds and his disciples, “You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practice what they preach.” The best way to influence others is not so much by words but by example. This explains why Pope John XXIII says, “It would scarcely be necessary to expand doctrine if our lives were radiant enough. If we behaved like true Christians, there would be no pagans.”

We remember our parents, preachers, teachers, and leaders not so much by their words but by their deeds. Abraham Lincoln tells parents, “There is one way to bring up a child in the way he should go, and that is to travel that way yourself.” Likewise, St. Padre Pio says, “The best way to lead others to the fruits of the Gospel is to preach by the example of our lives.” God invites all—parents, leaders, teachers, and preachers—to repentance: “Come, let us talk this over, says Yahweh. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like wool.” Are we ready to change our ways and set good examples?
