HOMILY OF 2ND WEDNESDAY IN THE LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Samuel 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16; Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22; Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a

Today, we celebrate a righteous man of faith, who took God’s word seriously under difficult circumstances and acted accordingly. We honor a committed and courageous father and husband, who, in addition to working hard to provide for his family, also abandoned his livelihood and risked his life for its sake. He did not mind the multiple disruptions to his life as long as his family was safe. Joseph was a perfect instrument and collaborator, whom God used to accomplish His purposes without complaints or resistance. As the one through whom God fulfilled the promise He made to David, in the first reading, concerning the Messiah, his faith is likened to that of Abraham in the second reading.

Today, let us be thankful for the men and fathers who make great sacrifices, and take family seriously enough to ensure that their responsibilities are properly and duly carried out. May God bless and be gracious to them so they may respond more generously to their vocations and reap the reward of their hard work and commitment. As for men who have failed their families, sometimes through no fault of theirs, may St. Joseph intercede for them so they may rise up to their responsibilities.

Dear Saint Joseph, patron, shield and protector of our families. Pray for us.
