HOMILY OF 2ND WEDNESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “STRECH OUT YOUR HAND.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Heb 7:1-3, 15-17; Psalm 109(110):1-4; Mark 3:1-6

Mark’s Sabbath controversies move on to another level today as the blindness that comes from the strict observance of the Law prevented Jesus’ opponents from experiencing the goodness of God, manifested in Jesus’ saving encounter with the man with the withered hand.

God, goodness itself, would be violated by refusal to do good on the Sabbath. But, the scribes and Pharisees thought they were doing God’s will by depriving the man with the withered hand of the gift of healing, in obedience to the law regarding the Sabbath. And when they could not have their way, they planned to destroy even the gift of God in their midst. Jesus’ words, “stretch out your hand,” were spoken not just to the man with the withered hand, but rather to the scribes and Pharisees, with their withered affiliation to the law, their withered hearts, minds and souls; spoken to many of us today, who are twisted in our ways of living and dealing with others, because we too may just have withered hearts, minds and souls; withered perspectives and ideologies. The Lord’s presence is healing and wholeness. He says stretch out your minds, hearts, souls, ways and lives beyond your selfish and proud individualism to see the goodness of God at work in the lives of others. Whatever it is that shrinks God’s goodness in our lives must be laid bare before Christ. He would stretch it out, heal it and make it whole. Refusal to heed those words of healing because of one’s hardheartedness and obstinacy only leads to self-destruction.

Christ, our eternal High Priest, heal our shriveled lives with your goodness. Amen.
