HOMILY OF 30TH THURSDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “PRAY ALL THE TIME, ASKING FOR WHAT YOU NEED…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Ephesians 6:10-20, Ps. 144:1-2,9-10, Luke 13:31-35

Life’s battles are many and can be tough. They must also be fought gallantly and courageously. In dealing with life’s battles, Jesus encourages us not to live in fear. His reaction to the news that his enemies were after his life demonstrates just that. That is because he was fully aware of the place of God in his life and of his destiny, including what it meant that he was approaching Jerusalem.

Human life is not earth-bound and we must live our lives with eternity in view. Knowing and embracing the fact that no one lives forever on earth and that eternity belongs in heaven with God, for those who live godly lives, helps us to live courageously and fearlessly. As St. Paul reinforces in the first reading, our earthly battle is against both seen (known) and unseen (unknown) forces, physical and spiritual. So, we do not go it alone. We go with God, who sees everything that is thrown at us. As Scripture constantly affirms and reassures us (1 Sam 17:47), the battle belongs to the Lord. We must invite Him in and give it to Him. While doing that, we must “grow strong in the Lord, with the strength of his power,” by cultivating good Christian virtues, which in turn become our armour in the battle against evil and the “foxes” that besiege us daily. Truth, integrity, faith, love for the gospel and peace, as well as total conversion of heart, are important elements of that battle and they must be the hallmark of our lives. Since the battle rages non-stop, we must never stop praying and partnering with God on life’s journey.

Lord, Shepherd of our Souls, save us from the fear of the unknown that we may live fearlessly and courageously. Amen.
