HOMILY OF 30TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “Give way to one another in obedience to Christ.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Eph 5:21-33; Psalm 127(128):1-5; Luke 13:18-21

The import of today’s first reading for marriage is sublime, and even though many refuse to use this reading for their marriage ceremonies, because of misconceptions, it remains a classical source of the true understanding of marriage, especially in mirroring the relationship between Christ and his Church as foundation.

The first verse is key to interpreting the rest of the passage. Any interpretation that deviates from that is falsified. Emphasis is on the phrase, “in obedience to Christ,” the only credible third party in a Christian marriage. When couples envision the other person as the only raison d’etre for one’s actions, to the exclusion of God, things go wrong. But when the place of God and Christ is intact, couples have a fuller understanding of situations and have greater capacity to accommodate shortcomings, provided each person has the same point of departure: God. Sacrifice is demanded of everyone for marriage to have its fullness; and that fullness comes from one’s ability to use Christ, and no other person or situation, as the measure of one’s life and actions in the marriage. The hallmarks of Christ’s sacrifice include, selflessness, generosity, endurance, understanding, forgiveness, outreach, and sublime love.
In a world where the institution of marriage has been bastardized by innovations, ideologies, frivolous definitions and conceptions, let the proper Christian understanding grow like a mustard seed and spread like yeast so that the dignity of marriage and family can be restored. People are not denied the right to association, but the institution called marriage must be left alone as established, while whatever other unions that there are must look for other nomenclatures for new and emerging situations. God help us.

Father, bless all marriages and families, especially those sealed in Christ Jesus. Amen.
