HOMILY OF 31ST THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR

HOMILY THEME: RESCUE EFFORT

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 15:1-10

Leo Tolstoy, the renowned Russian author, once said, “Love is the only way to rescue humanity from all ills.” Stories of rescue missions abound in our world. In the Scriptures, one of the greatest rescue missions is the liberation of the Israelites from Pharaoh’s oppression, followed by Jesus’ rescue of humanity from the power of sin. In Nigeria, stories of abductions and rescues frequently make the news. From hospitals, we hear about dedicated doctors working tirelessly to save patients. And whenever someone is in danger, we often see families and communities come together in organized rescue efforts.

Jesus emphasizes the worth and dignity of every individual through the parable of the shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for one that has strayed. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, rescues us from the power and bondage of sin, from spiritual forces that threaten us, and from oppression and shame. He is the ultimate rescuer, known as the Redeemer, Savior, and Deliverer. Jesus tells us there is great joy in heaven when a sinner is saved from a life of darkness. Do we pray and ask the Savior to rescue us from the bondage of sin? Are we also joining His rescue mission by extending a helping hand to those in spiritual need?
