HOMILY OF 31ST TUESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: THE MOST UNPOPULAR INVITATION?
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Philippians 2:5-11, Ps. 22:26-32, Luke 14:15-24
In Nigeria today, due to the harsh economic climate, many will rush to a wedding reception just for the food, without being specifically invited. Then imagine some folks turning down an important wedding invitation for flimsy reasons. Jesus’ story about the wedding feast was in response to the man among those who sat at table with him who said, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!” When this man spoke of the happiness of those who would be guests at God’s banquet he was thinking of Jews, and of Jews only, for the average, orthodox Jew would never have dreamed that gentiles and sinners would find a place at the feast of God.

Friends, do you know there are those who regard Church, worship, mass… with the utmost suspicion and disdain? Let’s not forget that in the end, the invitation has a time frame. Those who turned down the master’s invitation for different reasons had their invitation withdrawn, and commoners were invited instead. Even the man that accepted the invitation but came dressed without the right garment (in Matthew’s parralel) was thrown out into the outer darkness. It’s time to ask ourselves what God is inviting us to do. It’s time to wear the right attitude; time to allow God’s clean water wash our dirty garments, that we may find a spot at the banquet table. Are you with me?
God bless your day ahead.
