HOMILY OF 32ND MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “Obstacles are sure to come; but alas for the one who provides them…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Tit 1:1-9; Psalm 23(24):1-6; Luke 17:1-6

Today’s gospel issues a warning from Jesus, urging us not to be sources of scandal and deceit to others, especially the innocent and vulnerable. We must be good example of faithful discipleship to others. That “obstacles are sure to come,” in itself, is an invitation for us to understand that other people may become sources of stress to us and even disrupt our lives. Irrespective of how much they hurt us, however, we must not develop unforgiving hearts and spirits, but that we must forgive as often as the offender asks for forgiveness. Overcoming an unforgiving spirit is like uprooting a mulberry tree. Only faith, genuine faith in God’s goodness, can uproot and transplant it away from us. Cultivating a forgiving heart and disposition makes us vulnerable and open to being hurt. And being hurt can be painful, but forgiveness is the balm that soothes and heals even the worst of such pains. An unforgiving heart remains troubled because it seeks vengeance; and such a plight for vengeance enslaves the human person. True freedom can only be found in a forgiving spirit.

In today’s first reading, we encounter some instructions regarding offices in the early Church. Paul wrote personal letters to three people: Timothy, Titus and Philemon. Timothy and Titus were clearly pastoral letters, written to two of Paul’s successors and representatives of the next generation of Christian leaders after the apostles. They were instructed on how to sustain strong, faithful and enduring Christian communities. The same requirements for ministry remain in force today, to a great extent. So, we pray that all ministers and leaders in Christ’s Church may be faithful, loyal, committed, responsible and firm shepherds of their flock, according to the mind of Christ and in communion with the universal Church.

Lord, provide true shepherds for your flock and help us to be good disciples; disciples, who have experienced God’s love and mercy and who extend same to those who hurt them. Amen.
