HOMILY OF 33RD THURSDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed, and he will open the scroll and the seven seals in it.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Apoc 5:1-10; Psalm 149:1-6, 9; Luke 19:41-44

Yesterday, we celebrated the presence of God in heaven, where his angels and saints and the spirits of the just worship him in endless praise and thanksgiving.

Today, Jesus is presented to us as the Lamb that was slain and the one who shares in God’s glory; to him too, the heavenly hosts give worship, praise and adoration. He is proclaimed as the worthy one, whose sacrifice is acceptable to God for the salvation of the world. That is the import of his worthiness to receive the scroll and break its seals to reveal to humanity the things that are to come. Throughout the rest of the book of Revelation, he will be presented as one with the Father, eternally praised and glorified together. He paid the price of our redemption and, even in his glory, bears the mark of that sacrifice of ransom. While on earth, we must be preoccupied with things that would open the doors of that heavenly assembly to us so that we too may someday join the heavenly hosts in the eternal worship of the Father and the Lamb. That Lamb, through his sacrifice, has become the temple of God and the one in whom we gather to give praise and worship to God. Even as he predicted the destruction of the earthly temple in Jerusalem in today’s gospel, he prepared the minds of believers for the heavenly worship in the temple that would be built, not by human hands (Mark 14:58; Heb 9:11). At the end of Revelation, we hear that the new City had no temple, and had no need of one, because God and the Lamb are its temple (21:22).

Lord, purify our hearts and minds as you prepare us to worship you in spirit and in truth. Amen.
