HOMILY OF 33RD TUESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: SOMEONE’S KNOCKING AT THE DOOR!

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Apoc 3:1-6, 14-22; Psalm 14(15):2-5; Luke 19:1-10

The Church in Sardis had a reputation of being alive, but it was dead in reality. The Church in Laodicea had a similar problem. It was lukewarm; neither cold nor hot. The first church is encouraged to wake up, to rise and prevent total death, else God’s kingdom will overtake it like a thief in the night. What about the second church? It is told that whatever is neither hot nor cold will be spat out.

Friends, the great gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey did a song titled, “Someone’s knocking at the door.” Jesus is knocking. We can’t sit on the fence, pretending not to hear him. It is true that we may appear alive externally even when we’re approaching death spiritually. We may even have nothing in us that can be traced to Christ whom we claim to follow. However, one thing we learn from Zachaeus today is the willingness to repent. This man looked beyond his present limitations (both physical and otherwise), and expressed genuine interest in the person of Jesus Christ. He threw the door of his heart wide open, and salvation came straight into his house as a result.

God bless your day ahead.
