HOMILY OF 33RD WEDNESDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: DO NOT BE AFRAID OF FAILURE

BY: Fr. Ernest Cross

REVELATION 4:1-11, PSALM 150, LUKE 19:11-28

One of the reasons Jesus told the parable of the talents was to dispel the belief held by some that God’s kingdom would soon be fully realized. Their minds were focused on the future, so Jesus uses a story to bring them back to the present moment. In the parable, a man of noble birth travels to a distant country to be crowned king.

However, his servants were more concerned with how to use the resources he had entrusted to them in the present rather than worrying about the day of his return.

Excessive worry about the future can distract us from the here and now. It is essential that we use the resources and gifts the Lord has given us with courage and generosity, serving others in the present moment.

The Lord delights in this way of living. In contrast, the servant who, out of fear, simply hides his talent demonstrates a lack of faith and initiative. While we may make mistakes and experience failure when using our resources and gifts, the parable implies that failure is preferable to fearful inaction. Do not let the fear of failure prevent you from working hard and using your gifts.

God bless you.
