HOMILY OF 34TH FRIDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: SEE THE SIGNS
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Apocalypse 20:1-4,11-21:2, Ps. 84:3-6,8, Luke 21:29-33
In most parts of Africa, there are two main seasons: rainy and dry. The rainy season is for planting and cultivation, while the dry season (harmattan) brings dry grasses, dry rivers, and cold weather—though without snow. The dry season is also a time for harvest and outdoor ceremonies. Human beings are so familiar with natural seasons yet often fail to recognize God’s presence in all things.

Jesus says: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; as soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourself and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near” (Luke 21:29-31).
The kingdom of God draws near in both the dry and rainy seasons. The dry season can symbolize the dark periods of life when persecution and trials are abundant, while the rainy season represents times of joy when the Kingdom of God is revealed. Similarly, the rainy season may also reflect hardship and hard work due to the labor of planting, weeding, and cultivation, whereas the dry season, with its harvest and celebrations, can signify joy and the manifestation of God’s kingdom.
Regardless of the season, whether dry or rainy, these times come and go, but the Word of God and the Kingdom of God endure forever. How attentive are we to the spiritual signs of our time?
