HOMILY OF 34TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “She from the little she had has put in all her livelihood.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Apoc 14:1-5; Psalm 23(24):1-6; Luke 21:1-4

Today’s first reading reminds us of the bond between Jesus and his disciples, those who are marked and sealed with mark of the Lamb. They remain loyal, righteously committed, and unflinchingly faithful to the Lamb all the days of their lives and are redeemed from amongst humanity as “first fruits for God and of the Lamb.” The 144,000 redeemed, the first fruits for God and the Lamb, lived blameless lives on earth. Centered on the Lamb, they now enjoy His company, following Him “wherever he goes.” They have been assumed into the Lamb by virtue of the reward of eternal life. They gave all, including their very lives. These disciples are those who gave all, just like the widow in today’s gospel.

That concept of giving all characterizes the Widow’s Mite episode in the gospel. From the little she had, she gave all. That was a courageous product of untainted trust in God: she gave her whole self. We often refuse to give, saying we do not have. As often as we make such excuses, we rob ourselves of God’s bounteous blessings. That Widow went away blessed and her unreserved trust became her source of providence just like the widow of Zarephath, who was blessed by God for providing for Elijah by expending the little she had. Never say: “I do not have.” As long as we are alive, we always have something to offer, either of ourselves or of what we possess. Remember: “To the one who has, more will be given. From the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” As disciples, we must give all, all of the time, without holding anything back from God. All we are and all that we have come from God. Whatever we put into the service of God and humanity is simply a way of returning thanks to God for His love and mercies.

Father, we dedicate our lives to you; seal us with the mark of the Lamb and give us the grace to proudly identify with him here on earth so we may share eternal life with him in his glory. Help me to be generous like you; may I always give, that I may always have. Amen.
