HOMILY OF 34TH SATURDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 4:18–22 Feast of St. Andrew, the Apostle

We celebrate the feast of St. Andrew on this last day of Ordinary Time, and are reminded again to follow Christ with the same apostolic zeal and radical promptness with which Peter, Andrew and the first disciples responded to the Lord. They left everything and followed him; they laid their lives down for the mission to which they were called. On this eve of another Advent season, we are invited to review how we have responded to God’s call. It is a time to find out what holds us from responding promptly and fully. In addition to kicking such obstacles, we must follow through by cultivating virtues and attitudes that aid our response positively.

Our relationship with God must grow on more prayerful encounters and conversations, aimed at finding time to hear what God is calling us to do in our own day, place and time. The little habits that deprive us from having this genuine conversation must die and give way to full commitment to that relationship because God loves us unconditionally and is always faithful. This spiritually commitment necessarily affects our relationship with fellow human beings as we bear the fruits of missionary discipleship as blessings to them. Today’s first reading reminds us that, like St. Andrew, we as missionary disciples, must go on to bring others to Christ. Just as Jesus met him where he was and took him where he wanted him to be, so also, Jesus meets us where we are, and picks us up indiscriminately, without special pre-qualifications, in order to transform us into what he wants. Knowing this helps us to intentionally make ourselves malleable, like clay in the hands of a potter. Only the Lord can shape us into more perfect versions of ourselves as disciples. As missionary disciples, we are also bearers of good news to the places we go and are blessed for proclaiming Christ, whether welcome or unwelcome. Let us allow the coming Advent to open us up to living more fruitfully through both dimensions of our life’s journey.

Lord, give me grace to follow you faithfully. Amen.
