HOMILY OF 34TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Rev.18: 1-2.21-23; 19:1-3.9a; Lk 21:20-28
Humanity has experienced many of the signs in today’s gospel already and sometimes even worse. That we are alive today, however, has blinded people to the fact that we live in the end times, and so they continue to live recklessly. Tough times must come, but amidst them, disciples must remain righteous because the dangers that tough times portend are also opportunities for the liberation of the righteous. Unless one stays on the path of righteousness, however, one cannot stand erect and hold one’s head high. Sinful living lacks that kind of confidence and courage. The coming of the Son of Man is an event that disciples must look forward to with confidence and joy. While it is a time of judgment and condemnation for the unrighteous, it is a time of liberation from the bonds of sin and death for the righteous.

The coming of the Son of Man will also mark the great decisive victory of good over evil, of God and the Lamb over Satan and his kingdom, as portrayed in the first reading. As Satan’s domain is brought down and destroyed, God simultaneously raises a new creation from the huge number that is marked with the seal of the Lamb. These will join in singing the songs of victory in heaven with the heavenly hosts, praising and glorifying the God who judges justly, punishes evil and rewards good. The blessing pronounced at the end of the reading is ours, the same blessing that we receive in the invitation to commune with the Lamb at every Mass: “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.”
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Amen.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL!
It’s Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in remembrance and appreciation of God’s blessings to the nation and to individuals and families. It is a day to tell God “Thank you.” It also gives us a wonderful opportunity to appreciate and thank everyone who has impacted our lives as we journey through life. As Christians, we give thanks every day and for everything. The Holy Mass itself is our highest prayer of thanksgiving; because it is itself, Thanksgiving, Eucharist. We must appreciate even the littlest of favors, both tangible and intangible. Ingratitude is a crime; it actually shortchanges the one who is ungrateful, both now and going into the future. I thank God for all his blessings to me, and to my family and friends. We owe all that we are and have to God’s mercy, and I pray that God will give us many more reasons to continue to celebrate His goodness and remain thankful. I thank all family and friends who have been part of my journey. May God reward your kindness toward me. Thank you, God! Thank you all!
