HOMILY OF 34TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: ONLY GOD ENDURES
BY: Fr. Ernest Cross
As the liturgical year comes to a close, the readings often highlight the theme of endings and the transient nature of worldly things.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus foretells the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. This magnificent structure, which took eighty years to build, was central to Jerusalem and seemed everlasting. Yet, just forty years after Jesus’ crucifixion, the Roman army demolished it.

The Jewish people experienced a profound loss. We all face losses and endings in our lives, which can sometimes bring pain and uncertainty. These moments might even lead us to question the direction or purpose of our own lives.
However, the first reading speaks of a kingdom that will endure forever, a dominion that will never be destroyed. This is the kingdom of God. We know that God is eternal, and our relationship with Him remains unbroken, even amidst our losses. When everything else fails, we can trust in God, who ensures that we do not perish despite our challenges and losses.
