HOMILY OF 3RD SUNDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “THIS TEXT IS BEING FULFILLED TODAY EVEN
AS YOU LISTEN”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:12-30, Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

This is the 3rd Sunday in ordinary time (Yr. C). Today Jesus returned to Galilee, entered the Synagogue and began to teach them. His teaching made much impression on the people who bagan to praise him. He went to Nazara where he had been brought up and read the scroll of Isaiah and all eyes in the Synagogue were fixed on him. To save humanity from slavery to sin is paramount in his teaching. For he said: ” This scripture text is being fulfilled even as you listen” (Lk.1:1-4; 4:14-21).

In his days justice shall flourish and this is what he came to give to all humanity. Some people are not happy when they hear about Jesus or about the church. They forgot that all humanity is one in Christ. It’s like the analogy given by Paul about the parts of the body. “Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ ” (1Cor.12:12-30). One part of the body cannot say that it does not need the other.

As one people in Christ we are brothers and sisters. When one person suffers or is injured the rest of humanity suffer. This is why the commandments of God are binding on all humanity. Love your neighbor as yourself. This commandment was what Ezra read to the assembly of the people. “And Ezra read from the Law of God, translating and giving the sense, so that the people understood what was read” (Neh.8:2-6. 8-10). Today Jesus is reminding us that he came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. Love your neighbor as yourself. Happy Sunday.
