HOMILY OF 3RD TUESDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY OF 3RD TUESDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 7:51–8:1a; Psalm 31:3-4, 6-8, 17-21; John 6:30-35
Stephen stays on the message despite being face to face with death. Even though his innocence shone through in yesterday’s reading, the Sanhedrin and leaders were so corrupt that they did not see the injustice in the false accusations. It was a painful experience for Stephen, but he stayed focused on the ultimate goal and was completely oblivious to the evil in what he was going through; rather, just like his Master, the Lord Jesus, he turned his death place into a pulpit of divine love, from which he prayed for forgiveness for those who were killing him and yielded his life as his gift to God.

Christ, his Bread of life, strengthened him for that moment and helped him to see the life that he would be given beyond that moment. Stephen teaches us that our lives must be lived in imitation of Jesus in all its aspects. From him we learn that forgiveness of our enemies and those who persecute us is possible, actually, necessary; and that our destiny is God and the moment of death must find us ready to offer ourselves as our gift to God, following our earthly lives. We pray for Christians who continue to endure persecution today; and for the grace to be completely one with God, both in life and in death.
Lord, feed me now and evermore. Amen.
