HOMILY OF 3RD WEDNESDAY OF LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “The one who infringes…and teaches others to do so…the one who keeps…and teaches others to do so…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
At the heart of today’s readings is the importance of keeping God’s ordinance and handing them and the obligation to obey them to future generations. It was an obligation on Israel, just as Moses instructed in the first reading. It remains a solid instruction by which we must abide as Jesus directs in today’s gospel. Providentially, Jesus already simplified God’s law for us, reducing it from the Jewish code with 613 laws to a single commandment: LOVE. Love of God and love of neighbor. That is Jesus’ new commandment to us. Through observing it, we are brought into communion with God. It is also our passport to heaven.

The models for our obligation to such love are God and Christ. And if we remain open to the Holy Spirit, he teaches us how to love like God and Christ. But our obligation is incomplete until we hand over our faith and practice to the future generation. That is one area where mission is seriously deficient. We hand over everything to our children except God and God’s ways. We must reverse the tide and bring up children who become God’s friends.
Lord, teach me your law and give me the grace to love like you. Amen.
