HOMILY OF 4TH MONDAY IN ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY OF 4TH MONDAY IN ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Sam 1:24-28; Psalm (1 Sam 2:1, 4-8); Luke 1:46-56
Hannah thanked God and rejoiced because God looked on her lowliness and healed her, giving her a son in answer to her prayer. Mary’s song of thanksgiving, the Magnificat, expressed her gratitude, faith, joy and hope to a God, whose goodness shone forth in the unfolding mystery of her election as mother of His Son and in His mercy upon her cousin, Elizabeth. The entire hymn celebrates God’s love and kindness, manifested in the reversal of fortunes. It invites us to remain people of hope, even in dire times. It reminds us that God is faithful, mindful of his promises.

More profoundly, it reveals Mary’s humble response to the great prophetic declaration of Elizabeth regarding her exalted status. Instead of glowing in it, she attributed its glory to God while highlighting her lowly state, obliterated by God’s goodness. Because of what God has done in, for, to and through her, “all generations” will call her blessed: reechoing Elizabeth’s words, “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb…” As we celebrate Mary’s humility, faith and hope, may our generation proclaim her blessed by emulating her virtuous life.
King of the peoples and cornerstone of the Church, come and save man, whom you made from the dust of the earth. Amen.
