HOMILY OF 4TH THURSDAY IN EASTERTIDE — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 13:13-25; Psalm 89:2-3, 21-22, 25-27; John 13:16-20

The part of John’s gospel that we begin reading from today, from chapters 13–17, was an encounter between Jesus and his disciples alone and has a revelatory character. So, it is not surprising that Jesus reminds the disciples about his true identity in the following words: “From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.” “I AM,” as we know, is the name of God, the Father, that he gave to Moses in Exodus 3, when God appeared to Moses in the incident of the burning bush and sent him to the Israelites to deliver them.

In Jesus we encounter God because he is the Sent-One of the Father. And through his commissioning of the disciples, in which we share through our baptism, we become the sent-ones of the Lord Jesus. That is why the he reminds us that, as messengers, we ought to be modeled after the life and pattern of the Master, Jesus himself. That is how we become one with him and with the Father. In today’s first reading, the disciples continued their witness by relying on earlier traditions to present Jesus as Savior, in fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel. That was St. Paul’s initial proclamation and many would follow, showing that the God, who led Israel out of slavery in Egypt into the Promised Land, has sent us his only begotten Son, to lead humanity out of slavery to sin and darkness into the light of God’s reign. As we continue to listen to and obey the voice of our Good Shepherd, may we be led into the light of life everlasting.

Father, help us always to walk in the footsteps of the Master. Amen.
