HOMILY OF 4TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S CALL

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

HEB 12:18-24, MK 6:7-13

INTRODUCTION
Today, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Paul Miki and his companions, also known as the Holy Martyrs of Japan. He and his family, like many Japanese of that time, especially in the region of Nagasaki and Kyushu, converted to the Christian faith due to the efforts and hard work of the Jesuit missionaries, who laboured hard and spent a lot of time preaching about the Good News of God to the Japanese. It was told that about three hundred thousand or so Christians, both among the commonsfolk and the nobility existed at that time in Japan, and many more were converting to the faith. St. Paul Miki himself joined the Jesuits or the Society of Jesus after his conversion, and afterwards worked in evangelising his fellow Japanese, gaining many more converts to the Church.

ABOUT THE READINGS OF THE DAY
Both the first reading and the Gospel of today, speak about listening to God and following His call. In the first reading, the people of Israel are reminded of God’s power and holiness, which demand obedience and respect. In the Gospel, the apostles obey Jesus’ command to go out and share His message with others.
Obedience requires trust. The Israelites.

WHAT WE LEARN FROM THE READINGS OF TODAY
Obedience requires trust. The Israelites had to trust God even when His ways were overwhelming. The apostles had to trust Jesus as they went out with no guarantees of comfort or success. In both cases, God was leading His people to something greater than they could imagine.

CONCLUSION
This obedience also applies to us. God calls each of us to follow Him in our daily lives. It might be through acts of service, sharing our faith, or simply trusting Him in difficult times. When we listen and obey, we are walking in the footsteps of those who trusted God before us.

May God be with us always and may He bless each and every one of us, now and forevermore. Amen.
