HOMILY OF 4TH WEDNESDAY IN THE LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: JESUS, THE SOURCE OF LIFE
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
1 Peter 4:7-11; Ps.96:1-10; Luke 5: 1-11
The first verse of today’s first reading says: “At the favourable time I will answer you, on the day of salvation I will help you and I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people” (Is. 49:8). A statement of fact in accord with God’s nature.

In the first reading (Is 49: 8-15), Isaiah reassures the exiles of God’s promises of restoring them to the Promised Land by providing for them throughout their journey back. God is ready to care for them more than a loving mother cares for the child in her womb.
This is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who today in the gospel (John 5: 17-30) said: My Father goes on working, and so do I… for the Father who is the source of life has made the Son the source of life. ” This is in response to the religious leaders who questioned why He healed the paralyzed man by the pool on the Sabbath.
Dear friends, Jesus is not making a claim but stating the fact. The three Persons of the Blessed Trinity share in each other’s qualities, and in each other’s work, so that what is said of the Father, can be said of the Son, and what is said of the Son, can also be said of the Holy Spirit (Augustine’s doctrine of co-inherence). He, who is equal in dignity and stature with the Father, became a servant for our sake to ransom us from slavery to sin. He has the power to forgive us and to restore our relationship with God because He has paid the price for our sins. Do you want abundant life that Jesus offers?
I pray as we journey in life today, we will believe the Living Word of God, and His power to do what He has learnt from His Father in our lives. God the Father is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in love (Ps. 145: 8). God promised not to abandon us: “Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail to cherish the son in her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you” (Is. 45: 15). May this be our portion through Christ. Have a liberating-full day!
