HOMILY OF 5TH MONDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: HOLY SPIRIT TEACHES

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Acts 14:15–18; John 14:21–26

When the Holy Spirit teaches you, even your enemies take notes. This is because the wisdom of the Holy Spirit is undeniable and profound. In the journey of life, we get lost often and constantly need a guide and wayfinding techniques to give us a sense of direction. Spiritual ignorance is not bliss and has misdirected people into all kinds of dubious spiritual covenants to obtain power and wealth. The Prophet Hosea was deeply worried seeing how ignorance led his people astray, and he exclaimed, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).

Jesus gave a guide to solve spiritual ignorance and assured his followers, “The Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth” (John 16:13). The Spirit of truth guides us in the search for the truth, because “the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit teaches by inspiring and enlightening our hearts and minds with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

Further, we can describe the Holy Spirit as the inward and invisible teacher making it possible for people to walk in the statutes of God and observe His ordinances (Ezekiel 36:27). In our ignorance and stubbornness, the Holy Spirit teaches us to do God’s will and to “walk on level ground” (Psalm 143:10). Are we always humble, willing, and ready to be directed by the Spirit, our internal compass?
