HOMILY OF 5TH SUNDAY OF THE EASTERTIDE: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: TRUST STILL IN GOD AND TRUST IN ME!

BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke

Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12

As we continue our daily struggle in a world characterised by broken vows and frequent falls, Christ urges us to trust in him and reminds us of God´s perfect plan for each of us.

In the first reading, we see how God used the plight of the widows among the early Christians to realise his plan for the Church and for humanity. The Seven deacons who were initially elected primarily to attend to the material needs of these widows extended their mission to the service of ministering the word of God. As the life of Stephen highlights, it is through this newly instituted ministry that the Good News of Christ spread rapidly.

In the second reading, St. Peter encourages us to set ourselves close to Christ the living stone to be living stones. As the living stone, trust and confidence in our Lord Jesus Christ guarantees us the salvation Christ inaugurates through his incarnation, passion and resurrection. When we trust him firmly, we will also become like him, enduring all trials and tribulations coming our way with our eyes fixed Christ our sure hope of salvation. Through this trust in God, we manifest that we are incorporated into the community of God´s chosen people and his royal priesthood.

In the gospel, Jesus reminds us that the antidote to our troubled hearts and troubled world is a firm trust in God. He urges us to trust in God because he is ever present and ever accommodating. Whether it be moments of trials and tribulations, or of success and prosperity, God is always with us to help us and to walk with us. To those who doubt his ever-abiding presence, Christ´s response to Phillip is adrem. To prove to us that he is with us and understands us, God took our human nature. The life, passion and resurrection of Christ are thus the greatest proofs that God is always with us at all moments of our lives.

Beloved in the Lord, do not let your hearts be troubled! God, our loving father cares for us. In moments of success and prosperity, may we offer thanksgiving to him who is the source of all good. In challenging moments, may we hope in him who guided his early Church and granted the early Christians prosperity during tribulation. In all moments of our lives, we ought to always confide in him, hope in him, and rely on him. He is the surest guarantee of our salvation and prosperity. When trials, troubles, and temptations come knocking, when the odds seem to be against us, when all human efforts to attain a goal seem unsuccessful, Christ beckons on us not to let our hearts be troubled, but rather to trust still in God, and trust in Him!

May God increase our faith and hope in him, especially in moments of turbulence and tribulation. May Christ the way, the truth, and the life accompany us as we journey towards the Lord’s bosom!

Happy Sunday!
