HOMILY THEME: OBEY MY COMMANDMENT
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Act 8: 5 – 17, 1 Pet 3: 15 – 18, Jn 14: 15 – 21
Citizens obey the laws of the state and the state provides them with security and opportunities to develop their potential as human beings. Maintaining law and order in society requires obedience to rules and regulations. We clearly understand what obedience is, but we strongly dislike the cost of obedience.

The writer Mark Twain says, When I read the Bible, the parts that trouble me the most are not the ones I don’t understand, but the ones I understand.” Obedience is costly and difficult, but it has some value. Jesus says to his disciples, If you love me, you will obey my commandment” (ohn 14:15). St. Augustine considers obedience as the mother of all virtues.
Obedience is not limited to listening, but also responding to the inner voice of the spirit that lies deep within us. Obedience, according to Daniel Groody, is not just about following our hearts, because following our hearts can lead us into selfishness. Obedience is usually accompanied by commitment and conviction. Can we decide today to renew our commitment to obeying the divine commandments?
