HOMILY OF 6TH TUESDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: HOLY SPIRIT, THE ADVOCATE

BY: Fr. Ernest Cross

Acts 16:22–34; John 16:5–11

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus asserts that when the Advocate arrives, he will challenge the world’s beliefs regarding sin, righteousness, and judgment. Those who ordered Jesus’ execution believed he was the sinner and transgressor of God’s law, convinced that they were justified in upholding it. They thought that Jesus’ crucifixion served as proof of God’s condemnation of him.

However, the truth is that those who crucified Jesus were the sinners, having rejected God’s only Son. The Holy Spirit, working through the disciples, would demonstrate that Jesus was justified, as he had been vindicated by God beyond death. Our human judgments about who is a sinner and who is in alignment with God can often be misguided. When left to our own understanding, we are susceptible to error.

To gain insight from God’s perspective rather than just our own, we need the Holy Spirit to teach and enlighten us. At times, we may resist what the Spirit is revealing to us, clinging to our own judgments. Nevertheless, it is essential to listen to what the Spirit may be conveying. Only the Holy Spirit can provide us with the broader understanding we seek.

God bless you.
